In de Zwanenzangen schrijft de dichter zijn laatste gedicht, als hij denkt dat hij dood gaat; in de Heldinnenbrieven laat de dichter een vrouw die in een crisissituatie verkeert een brief schrijven aan haar man, die al zo lang weg is, die haar in de steek gelaten heeft, of aan haar moeder vlak voor haar executie. Allemaal heel dramatische situaties, en toch zijn de gedichten vermakelijk, omdat de lezers verstrooiing van de dichter verlangen. Dat wordt anders in de romantiek, dan wordt er mee gesnikt. Dan heeft de stervende dichter teveel oprecht zelfmedelijden, dan maakt de dichter fouten tegen het decorum. Guépin heeft alle gedichten in verzen vertaald, meest uit het Latijn, omdat deze conventionele genres eigenlijk alleen maar lukken in het Latijn. De beroemdste verzen van Heine of Kloos blijken zelfs baarlijke nonsens te bevatten. (www.let.leidenuniv.nl)

This book addresses a range of highly debated problems among scholars of Plato’s Phaedo and provides an overall interpretation of the dialogue. For each of the topics (or Platonic passages) analysed, the book presents a detailed assessment and discussion of the most prominent scholarship. On the basis of this approach, From Death to Life: Key Themes in Plato's Phaedo intends to offer new contributions to the current scholarly discussion, particularly with regard to the knowability of the Forms, “recollection”, the doctrine of the soul as a harmony, the problem of causes, and the so-called “second voyage”. This book is expected to spark debate among scholars both in terms of the critical assessment of the theses it proposes and of the objections it raises against alternative interpretations.
